Key FindingStatins prevent first heart attacks in men with high cholesterol

About the Trial

The West of Scotland Coronary Prevention Study randomized 6,595 healthy men with elevated LDL cholesterol to pravastatin or placebo. Over 4.9 years, pravastatin reduced nonfatal heart attack and coronary death by 31 percent with no increase in noncardiac death. This proved statins work in primary prevention, people with no prior heart disease. WOSCOPS overcame skepticism that treating healthy people was worth it, opening the door to population wide prevention. Twenty year follow up showed the five years of statin continued to confer benefit decades later, an often cited example of a legacy effect.
