About the Trial

The Trial Assigning Individualized Options for Treatment enrolled 10,273 women with hormone receptor positive, HER2 negative, node negative breast cancer and assigned treatment by 21 gene recurrence score. Women with midrange scores 11 to 25 were randomized to endocrine therapy alone or plus chemotherapy. Chemotherapy showed no overall benefit in this group, although some women aged 50 or younger with scores of 16 to 25 had a small benefit. The results indicated that roughly 70 percent of women with this type of cancer derived little benefit from chemotherapy. TAILORx rapidly changed practice, reducing chemotherapy use and its toxicity and cost. It is the clearest demonstration of genomic testing driving de escalation of cancer treatment.
