About the Trial

The Synergy between PCI with Taxus and Cardiac Surgery trial randomized 1,800 patients with three vessel or left main disease to paclitaxel stents or CABG. For the overall cohort, surgery reduced major cardiac events at 12 months, 12.4 versus 17.8 percent, driven by repeat revascularization. But in simple or intermediate anatomy, the SYNTAX score low tertile, outcomes were comparable. The trial birthed the SYNTAX score, an anatomic complexity grading system now central to heart team decisions. Five and 10 year follow ups confirmed durable surgical advantage in complex disease, while left main equivalence in low complexity expanded PCI indications.
