Key FindingEnalapril reduces mortality in mild to moderate heart failure

About the Trial

The Studies of Left Ventricular Dysfunction treatment arm randomized 2,569 patients with chronic heart failure and ejection fraction under 35 percent to enalapril or placebo. Over an average of 41 months, enalapril reduced death by 16 percent and death or hospitalization for heart failure by 26 percent. Combined with CONSENSUS, ACE inhibition became standard across the spectrum of systolic heart failure. The prevention arm showed benefit even in asymptomatic reduced ejection fraction. SOLVD gave clinicians a way to alter the natural history of heart failure, which had a 5 year survival worse than many cancers at the time.
