RECOVERY
About the Trial
The Randomised Evaluation of COVID 19 Therapy platform trial in the UK randomized over 11,000 hospitalized COVID patients to multiple candidate treatments within months of the pandemic. Dexamethasone reduced 28 day mortality by one third in ventilated patients and one fifth in oxygen requiring patients, no benefit in those without hypoxia. NHS England later estimated that the cheap, decades old steroid had saved about a million lives worldwide by early 2021. Lopinavir, hydroxychloroquine, and azithromycin failed, tocilizumab later reduced deaths, and convalescent plasma showed no benefit. RECOVERY proved a pandemic can be answered with rigorous randomized evidence at speed, and its platform design, borrowed from STAMPEDE, became the global template for COVID research.
