About the Trial

The Coronavirus Efficacy trial randomized 30,420 adults at sites across the United States to two doses of Moderna's mRNA-1273 vaccine or placebo, with deliberate enrollment of older adults, people with high risk conditions, and communities of color. The primary analysis found 94.1 percent efficacy against symptomatic COVID-19, and severe cases occurred only in the placebo group. Published in December 2020, shortly after the FDA granted emergency use authorization, the trial confirmed together with Pfizer's that mRNA vaccines could be developed, tested, and deployed within a year of a new virus being identified, a landmark for vaccine science.
