About the Trial

Umberto Veronesi randomized 701 women with small breast cancers under 2 cm to radical mastectomy or breast conserving quadrantectomy plus radiotherapy. Survival was identical over 20 years. Local recurrence in the conserved breast was about 9 percent, manageable with salvage surgery. Veronesi published the Milan results in 1981 and Fisher followed with NSABP B-06 in 1985 showing the same for lumpectomy. Together they ended routine mastectomy for early breast cancer. Millions of women since have kept their breasts without sacrificing survival, one of oncology clearest quality of life victories derived from randomized evidence.
