About the Trial
KEYNOTE-024 randomized 305 patients with untreated metastatic non small cell lung cancer and PD L1 expression of 50 percent or more to pembrolizumab or platinum chemotherapy. The immunotherapy improved progression free and overall survival with far fewer side effects. It was the first trial showing a checkpoint inhibitor superior to chemotherapy first line in a biomarker selected population. KEYNOTE-189 and -407 then showed benefit adding pembrolizumab to chemo for the rest. Lung cancer treatment bifurcated into immunotherapy and targeted branches. KEYNOTE-024 marked the inflection where immunotherapy moved from last resort to foundation of frontline cancer treatment.
