About the Trial

The Hypertension in the Very Elderly Trial randomized 3,845 patients aged 80 and over with systolic pressure over 160 to indapamide plus perindopril or placebo. Treatment reduced stroke by 30 percent, of borderline significance, cardiovascular events by 34 percent, and death from any cause by 21 percent. The trial stopped early on ethics: placebo patients were dying more. Before HYVET, doctors hesitated to treat the very old, fearing falls and side effects. The trial showed cautious treatment extends life in the fastest growing demographic. Its target of 150 over 80 has been widely cited for very elderly patients, though recommended targets differ between guidelines.
