About the Trial

The Females United to Unilaterally Reduce Endo Ectocervical Disease trial randomized over 12,000 young women to the quadrivalent HPV vaccine or placebo. The vaccine prevented 98 percent of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2 to 3 or adenocarcinoma in situ related to HPV 16 or 18 in women not previously infected with those types. PATRICIA showed the bivalent vaccine similarly. These trials made HPV vaccination routine for girls from 2006, later boys, with Australia projected to eliminate cervical cancer by 2035. Along with the hepatitis B vaccine, which prevents liver cancer, it is one of the few vaccines that protect against a major human cancer.
