CREDENCE
About the Trial
CREDENCE randomized 4,401 patients with type 2 diabetes and albuminuric chronic kidney disease, already on renin angiotensin blockade, to canagliflozin or placebo. The trial was stopped early when canagliflozin reduced the primary composite of end stage kidney disease, doubling of creatinine, or renal or cardiovascular death by 30 percent. It was the first dedicated kidney outcomes trial of an SGLT2 inhibitor and the first major advance in diabetic kidney protection since ARB trials in 2001. Its results, followed by DAPA-CKD and EMPA-KIDNEY, made SGLT2 inhibitors a cornerstone of chronic kidney disease care, including in patients without diabetes.
