Key FindingApixaban beats warfarin on efficacy, bleeding, and death

About the Trial

The Apixaban for Reduction in Stroke and Other Thromboembolic Events in Atrial Fibrillation trial randomized 18,201 patients to apixaban 5 mg twice daily or warfarin. Apixaban reduced stroke or systemic embolism by 21 percent, major bleeding by 31 percent, and all cause mortality by 11 percent. It was the only DOAC trial to show superiority on all three key outcomes simultaneously. Lower rates of intracranial hemorrhage drove the benefit. Apixaban became one of the most widely prescribed DOACs. AVERROES had already shown apixaban superiority over aspirin when warfarin was unsuitable.
