About the Trial

AIDS Clinical Trials Group 320 randomized 1,156 HIV patients with CD4 under 200 to zidovudine plus lamivudine with or without indinavir. The triple arm reduced AIDS defining illness or death by about 50 percent, mostly opportunistic infections, and cut HIV RNA below detection. With other protease inhibitor trials of 1996 and 1997, it underpinned the so called Lazarus effect as gravely ill patients recovered. US AIDS deaths fell by more than half within a few years. ACTG 320 fixed the standard of three drug combination antiretroviral therapy that, modernized over decades, can suppress the virus long term and makes HIV a chronic manageable disease.
