Key FindingPSA screening reduced prostate cancer deaths by 20 percent at the cost of substantial overdiagnosis

About the Trial

The European Randomized Study of Screening for Prostate Cancer randomized men in several European countries to PSA based screening or no screening. The 2009 report in the New England Journal of Medicine found a 20 percent relative reduction in prostate cancer mortality among men aged 55 to 69, but estimated that 1,410 men needed to be screened and 48 additional cancers treated to prevent one death. Published alongside the American PLCO trial, which found no benefit amid heavy screening in its control arm, ERSPC framed the modern debate over overdiagnosis. Longer follow up strengthened the mortality benefit, and guidelines shifted toward shared decision making.
